Thorough design development
The basic design concept
Most plastics have a material
memory (G) but even if moulded originally in their closed state this
would not cause them to grip tightly enough - something was needed to
make the peg 'want' to go past the point of closure to grip tighter. The
material memory effect meant that a plastics spring could do the job but
it would have to be moulded separately. If it was then squeezed together
before being inserted in the peg the spring would exert a closing force
on the peg as it tried to return to its original, moulded shape. But Ivor
knew that assembling a peg and a spring would drive up the cost of the
product and make it uncompetitive.
