What if energy saving products looked so good that people, well, just wanted them. RED invited four design teams to create products they think would make energy saving desirable. The responses included new products, for the home, and improvements to existing ones, plus some intriguing thoughts…

Concrete Blond - Interior Insulation
Concrete Blond’s insulating panels are designed to be seen. Made of concrete but decorated with the pattern of traditional wallpaper they are made to be fitted inside your home on exterior-facing walls. The cavity behind the panels can filled with insulating foam to reduce heat loss.

This innovative product would be ideal for older homes with solid walls that are difficult to insulate any other way. The panels are tapered to join neatly at the corners, and formed to accommodate windows, doors, radiators and light switches.

More Associates - EnergyLock and EnergyClock
What if your house had an off switch? The EnergyLock doorlatch displays the energy use of your home at the moment you exit and provides a single, simple switch to turn off all unnecessary devices while you’re out. The lock communicates with devices throughout the home via the MorePower wireless network and sensors at the plug sockets.

What if there was an electricity meter so beautiful you’d want to hang it on the wall? Using the same low power radio link to get its data, EnergyClock subtly displays household electricity use by changing the colour of the dial.

Conran & Partners – 21st Century uPVC
Conran & Partners have updated uPVC windows for the 21st century. Their new windows allow homeowners to have the energy saving, security and cost benefits at a fraction of the price of aluminium or steel equivalents.

Unlike current uPVC windows they don’t try to replicate wooden frames - instead, the amount of visible plastic has been reduced so you get more window for your money.

Luckybite and Iogi

What could make you curious about something unknown? Luckybite and
Iogi's attempts to sketch apparently famililiar things from memory
kicked off a brainstorm that produced a string of ideas.

What if a bill came complete with a quiz or a challenge that made you
and the family curious? What if you could hear the pennies dropping
faster every time you switched on the kettle? Or what if you could see
how much energy your neighbour was using and how you both compare to
the rest of the street, or a street in another town?
