26.10.05 / Energy statement / Bob Carter Wrm Zones

Obligation to introduce overall energy suppply sources in hand by Suppliers.

Intersting but no liley to have great impact, some will not like carbon freindly nuclear!

26.10.05 / Virtual house / Bob Carter Warm Zones

Very effective communications tool.

Scores would need validation (SAP) (NHER) and caveat that indication only, all home differ in size/rooms/build etc

26.10.05 / Home monitoring display / Bob Carter Warm Zones

Gadget heaven, if practical but limited real benefit to households that have little income, high fuel cost unlikey to be able to invest. Even if provided string education and support needed to encourage use.

26.10.05 / Job Done / Bob Carter

Would need redesin of market, price transparency and quality guarantees. Could work but !

26.10.05 / OneMillionRoofs / Bob Carter Warm Zones

If funding available to encourage and make attractive fine, reality is that giving away free insulation is hard.
Fuel costs / image would need developing, doubtful if 1 million achievable. Solar/PV ? what

27.10.05 / Energy Parties / Bob Carter Warm Zones

Interesting concept. Current take up and interest in free services is low, awareness capaign needed. For a segment of aspiring households in Kensington etc but for low income segment it would not work. Needs to be 100% independent and with certificates etc real cost would be higher, my estimate £50 per home for max 2 hours, thus party bit impractical across 2 homes?

Segmented for Kensington, maybe. Newham doubtful. Difficult unless 100% independent. Cost nearer £50 per home, moving to two home maybe not a party
Cost ?
Poor ?

27.10.05 / Home monitoring display / DDP

I think that this is a great idea!

I had an idea similar to this in regards to a automobile. Same idea but applied to gas usage. A small tracker would tell you in real time how much using your car actually costs you.

I love this idea so much. I am living in Canada and I think that Canadians are in desperate need of this kind of technology. We use so many resources and this would be a "new media" way of deveoping a energy culture.

Thanks for the ideas!

28.10.05 / Energy statement / John Crouch

This is something that is going to be introduced with all suppliers. I know the concept is to provide a central source of information regarding all energy use however, I can't see the various suppliers providing information through to one source? Local Authorities have struggled to get the data on a borough wide basis as it has previously been regarded as 'commercially sensitive'

28.10.05 / Home monitoring display / John Crouch

Like the idea of visual display for energy use, would like an idea of costs for a system as monitoring electricity is relatively straight forward but costs mount up when looking at gas heating. Would be interesting to link this with the other areas such as ability to compare to other properties in area. This may help to highlight a lack of cavity wall or loft ins'.

28.10.05 / Virtual house / John Crouch

Like this one as it gives the owner the ability to make informed choices for investment based on the various possibilities. EST web site provides some of this info' but in a different format. This is more 'user friendly'

28.10.05 / Energy rating / John Crouch - Creative Environmental Net

This will come in as part of the energy rating scheme for dwellings in the 'near' future. It provides the A-G rating we are used to seeing on white goods applied to houses. We have approached local estate agents to try something similar but none were currently interested. The hope is the seller will see the cost benefit of improving the property prior to sale so get the work done.

31.10.05 / OneMillionRoofs / Carol Hayes

we don't all live in London! what about the proles in the outer reaches?

31.10.05 / Energy Trading / J Walker NUI

Hand the business model for power generation over to the household - what more of a free market could you want?!

01.11.05 / Energy statement / Philip Kear

We need some way of visualising/understanding what CO2 savings mean. Red busses and how savings could power them is one good way of doing this. Tonnes of C or CO2 have little relevance to consumers

01.11.05 / OneMillionRoofs / Philip Kear

Tangibility is what we need. A 1 million campaign could engage communities and the media. Small wind turbines turbines may not be cost effective yet but they are very visible. A good constant reminder to housholders and neighbours

01.11.05 / Virtual house / Philip Kear

Keep it simple otherwise only fanatics are likely to use the system. Points are better to unsderstand than savings, linking points to red busses would be good.

01.11.05 / Power pension / Philip Kear

Good idea BUT public opinion on the pension gap may undermine it.

04.11.05 / Energy Trading / David Hirst

I think this is an excellent idea. If we are to get maximum benefit from investment in home generation, we do need to share resources, and trading with each other seems a very good way of doing this. So long, of course, as the trading is fair and safe.
The concept seems to work best for electricity, rather than the more nebulous energy. I do not expect to have gas I can sell, but I can have electricity from PV and wind turbines, even from my CHP boiler.
Such trading is best done quite locally - it is basically small scale - so a possible name is Neighbourhood Electricity Trading Scheme - NETS.

07.11.05 / Energy statement / Harry

Suppliers should provide this informmation to all consumers.

09.11.05 / Energy Parties / Alexis Anderson

Global Action Plan is already running something very similar through its 'EcoTeams' programme. See www.globalactionplan.org.uk

14.11.05 / Energy Trading / Grant Davidson

people are selfish. why would anyone give away energy for free. politicians just now are proposing a similar idea which would allow consumers to sell the excess energy to suppliers. the say the will ensure suppliers pay market price. the bill is still to be accepted.

14.11.05 / Energy Trading / Grant Davidson

this is a stronger concept but is still to complex. consumers are interested in price reduction not co2 reduction.

14.11.05 / Home monitoring display / Grant Davidson

how does the system recognise that its the bathroom light? seems promising but i have far simplier solution. grantdavidson@hotmail.co.uk

14.11.05 / Energy Parties / Robin Sadler

This is already being done through lots of Community Action energy initiatives, and the presentation is usually FREE from an Energy Efficiency Advice Centre. Hundreds of talks like this are being given each year NOW.

14.11.05 / Virtual house / Robin Sadler

I like this Virtual House idea very much, as it enables peop[le to do their own energy audit on line and play with the costs and savings of various options. It's what Energy Efficiency Advice Centres shoul;d have done long ago, but it also needs tying into Suppliers of kit.

17.11.05 / Home monitoring display / Will Smith

The display in the film is excessive and confusing.

Why not just fit every plug socket with a small display, showing the number of watts that device is using. I already bought a similar device to this (from Maplin), except you have to plug it in, and plug the device into the back of it. It's given me a very good understanding of which devices use what, and which devices are still greedy on standby.

17.11.05 / Home monitoring display / Will Smith

The display in the film is too clever and unnecessary.

All is necessary is that each plug socket has a small LED display on it, showing the number of watts that socket is supplying. I already bought a similar product (that plugs in) from Maplin. It's given me a good understanding of which are the "greedy" devices.

21.11.05 / Energy statement / Sarah Darby

This is an excellent idea. The UK is very slowly moving towards it with electricity disclosure on bills and the piloting of more informative bills. See work by the CSE in Bristol and the ECI at Oxford on both these: the people they asked were keen on annual energy reports as well as better bills.

21.11.05 / Home monitoring display / Sarah Darby

The displays look great, and the evidence is that displays like this do help people learn how to conserve energy. In addition to selling them, they could be loaned from public libraries/information centres.

21.11.05 / Virtual house / Sarah Darby

Nice format. It does need to be kept simple - and important to point out that the system is approximate - specially the comparisons. The government-approved SAP ratings are based on space and water heating (and, soon, lighting) - they don't include appliances.

21.11.05 / OneMillionRoofs / Sarah Darby

Apart from what such a scheme might produce in terms of electricity, it's good from the point of view of getting lots of us to connect up our thinking about supply and demand. Householders generating their own electricity also need accurate information on insulation, and how best to control their heating and hot water systems. ie use new methods of supply in tandem with reducing demand.

30.11.05 / Virtual house / Mimi

I want to use this free. How??

05.12.05 / Energy statement / Cherie Lebbon Southgate

This is information all users should have and might wake up those who don't think much about the energy they consume.
In multi occupancy households e.g. with children or students, it would be great for each person to understand their consumption and by using icons similar to those illustrated here it will be easy to understand.

07.12.05 / Home monitoring display / Susan Ballard

Research I've been doing on intelligent metering as carried out by Leicester City Council confirms this as an effective idea. I want to comment on the whole site which is fantastic; a creative breathe of fresh air in a frequently depressing and inert socio-political climate. If any of these ideas progress, I want to be the first to know; my meagre cheque book at the ready.

09.12.05 / OneMillionRoofs / Fletch

in its purest and naive form i love this idea. I would be a great way for communities to generate their own power. the potential problems i can see arising is who would own the power generated, who would foot the bill of instilation, and this doesn't take into account renters, olny home owners.

12.12.05 / Virtual house / Robin Brookes

This idea seems to encourage consumerism. I wonder if it takes account of the social audits of the companies it refers to.

19.12.05 / Home monitoring display / Candida Spillard

I think this is a great idea and (as they say) Every Home Should Have One. How about making it part of the Building Regulations for all new builds and re-wiring jobs?

19.12.05 / OneMillionRoofs / Candy Spillard

This has taken off really well in Japan and Germany. It is sunny enough here to make it worthwhile, but most people will need some convincing of that!

21.12.05 / Home monitoring display / Liz Parr

didn't get any image so not certain about this one!

13.01.06 / Home monitoring display / Rit Mishra

Its a good way to reduce energy consumption in home scenario. Energy display is a good, smart and visually stimulate way to make people aware to save energy.
Great Idea !!

22.01.06 / OneMillionRoofs / Talis

Great idea - for Londoners. Bring it out into the rest of the country too, pleaes!

15.02.06 / OneMillionRoofs / Di Smith

I don't live in London.
I live in NW Norfolk in a draughty house built in 1850.
There is no gas supply. I use economy 10 night stores and a multi-fuel stove for heat and water in the winter. And I waste masses on energy. How can I take part in an energy audit?

18.05.06 / Home monitoring display / John Brooks

How does this gadget collect data about individual appliances, lights, etc.? You're surely not suggesting that the whole house is equipped with self-identifying, self-monitoring appliances?
It IS possible to monitor electrical consumption at the meter by 'consumption signatures' (see NIALMS on web) but that does NOT work at the level of individual lightbulbs.

13.07.06 / Home monitoring display / G Martin

childish rubbish. bubbles of different sizes and speeds? not exactly scientific. try a simple bar chart, split by room, or usage type (lighting, heating, cleaning, entertainment etc), with "current activity", "since 6am this morning", and "month-to-date" display options.

13.07.06 / Energy statement / G Martin

re: other comments: The statement isn't just about fuel mix disclosure, it is about comparing yourself with benchmarks of usage, CO2 and cost, as shown in the other sheets. a great idea, as long as estimates are not used for any of the data!

14.07.06 / Virtual house / Paul Roberts

What is going on here? I came to this site after reading the defra 'Energy, resource, environmental and sustainable Management' magazine, where an article told me that I could use this model now. Is this just another example of government departments spinning out a more positive version of events than really exists?

14.07.06 / Home monitoring display / Jim Rignal

Interesting but too many options will detract from the object of reducing energy. Need to show when energy is above normal. Small point - the display shows energy used as watts; watts are power (energy/second) so should be shown as Watt-hours, kWh or Joules.

18.07.06 / Job Done / Bad Idea

because you don't need more people involved from user to fitter but less!
