projects

brief 1
1/
Take a single piece of packaging from your last visit to the supermarket.
2/ Examine how the packaging works in terms of function, image, materials, and instructions for opening.
3/ Propose design changes to the packaging to a) enhance shelf presence b) improve openability c) improve sustainability d) reduce cost.
4/ Study the impact of your four proposals and amalgamate the best of all four into one ‘superpack’ redesign.

brief 2
1/
Study the foodstuffs market for single people living alone, young and old.
2/ Develop ideas for a branded collection of foods for your local supermarket aimed at that ‘home alone’ market, making careful note of volumes of food required, the stigmatising effects associated with 'single dining' and how might affect the image and placement within the supermarket.
3/ Make a design proposal for the brand image of the range and where it will ‘sit’ within the supermarket environment.

brief 3
1/
Look at an older person's (or a disabled person’s) weekly shopping and observe them opening items in their kitchen. (Select your candidate from among friends and relatives).
2/ Identify the three most problematic packs in terms of opening. If necessary, consider which pack type requires an opening aid or tool (such as a knife) when this shouldn’t be necessary.
3/ Propose design solutions for the three items.
4/ Take your solutions back to the person you have observed and ask them to compare between the original and the redesign.
5/ Take one item and propose a design solution for one-handed opening.

brief 4
1/
Look at the hazardous side of pack openability - the dangers of using scissors, knives etc.
2/ Design an in-store information system for your local supermarket to draw people’s attention to the dangers and encourage them to take care.
3/ Install your information system in the college cafeteria and solicit feedback form students.

brief 5
1/
Take the standard (and much hated) mini milk sachet.
2/ Suggest a redesign so that it does not spill all over your clothes.
