To address the Inclusive Design challenge, around a dozen new design graduates of the RCA are selected every year to become Helen Hamlyn Research Associates. They are employed to work three days a week for 12 months on 'live' design research projects in collaboration with industry.

These projects aim to explore the design of new products, services and environments that include the needs of those people who are traditionally excluded from the design process - mainly older and disabled people, but also those groups in society who are economically vunerable or marginalised by changing technologies and patterns of work.

The projects vary in scale, discipline and subject - from airport interiors and power tools to supermarket packaging and public health campaigns. But the overall goal is the same - to achieve greater social inclusion through innovative design thinking and its commercial application.

The work of the Research Associates is documented by the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre - and the projects form the basis of this resource.
