ITEMS Presents
The VISUAL POWER SHOW
The Power of Creativity
October 2005

On October 23, 2005, The Visual Power Show, in cooperation with Items, the magazine of design and imagination, presents new insights, images and ideas on the power of creativity.

Theme: The Power of Creativity
The western world has built as much as it possibly can build, and it has entered an age in which product innovation and entertainment keep the world turning economically (or at least are supposed to). Products, media, politics, subculture, and everything that could possibly be lucrative is sold as brand. Designing recognizable brand identities has itself become a factor of economic significance, for recognizability is perhaps the most successful product of our age. Design has the potential to develop further as an economic factor, but it will also respond to developments in society as a critical language in dialogue or in contradiction with those developments.

International networks, new media, globalization and socio-economic issues have caused the roles of creative professionals to change.
Design is still about style, but in the sense of lifestyle. In this revised definition, style is about what position a designer chooses in a world where various local, national and international relationships are under pressure. Can a designer, for instance, contribute to better relationships between people, countries or cultures? Designers cannot escape the choice of whether to contribute to solving social, economic, cultural and even political problems. The next question, then, is: How?

The Show
The Visual Power Show is an intellectual show that addresses imagination in our society. The Visual Power Show will communicate critical political opinions on the current state of the image in an inspiring way.

Visual Power is a project on the power of the imagination. With this event, the aim is to make a creative contribution to the discussion around visual culture and the influence of media, technology and economics on the image. Image communicates content: to say this is no more intrinsically untrue than to say that text by definition contains truth. Image and visual recognizability are surpassing the system of alphabetical order.

The Format
The Visual Power Show can be placed as an event in between a conference and a pop concert. The show represents a field of mixed disciplines and cultures where we search for the essence of a research, a vision, a thought, an image. Guests will be asked to contribute for 5 minutes and will be offered the entire stage, all possible technical equipment and assistance. 5 Minutes might look like short, you can compare this with speaking out two pages A4 or a very long pop song.
