jGuateAmala!

jGuateAmala! translates from Spanish to 'Love Guatemala'. It is a long- term project campaigning to encourage Guatemalans to think positively about their country's future. Alice Rawsthorn's article in the Herald tells how Bruce Mau's design thinking reached beyond the creation of a visual identity for the campaign, and helped redefine the vision. Rawsthorn talks about geodesign or 'new design' as an emerging field in which design thinking is used to address social and political problems. Mau's Massive Change project (exhibition, book, events) had previously 'explored paradigm-shifting events, ideas, and people, investigating the capacities and ethical dilemmas of design'. Of jGuateAmala! Mau says "Of course, we can't solve Guatemala's problems, that can only be accomplished by Guatemalans. But by sharing our communication tools, we can help. What could be better than that?"

Alice Rawsthorn was Director of the Design Museum before becoming design critic of the International Herald Tribune. Read the article here.

The name is BoND.....

Our colleagues in Bolton are moving ahead apace with developing the joint ideas for self-management in diabetes. The BoND team at the Bolton Diabetes Network have been driving this forward, with support from across the NHS in Bolton and from other partners and 15 GP's surgeries signed up for the trial. Plans for rolling out a pilot of the diabetes agenda cards are now on the verge of going live with the goal of getting initial results in March 2007, with hopes for identifying a wider roll-out of the cards and trainers from summer 2007.

activmobs are go!

Those of you who have been following the RED Health project will know that we have been working with Kent County Council in developing the activmobs concept into a live service. We have built a team to provide support, with involvement from experts in social software and social enterprises. Kent have defined initial focus locations and are starting to build networks of motivators and trainers – if you are in the area and would like to get involved contact RED for more details. It’s exciting to see this getting of the ground and we will post updates on progress as we move forward!

Such smart cards

emissary-credit-card-large%5B1%5D.jpg

We've talked about carbon credit cards before but Design Stream have come up with an Emmissary Credit Card concept that is aimed at helping consumers make ethical consumption choices on the spot at the point of purchase, with messages about their consumption choices actually displayed on the card itself. It relies on the next generation of chip and screen technologies of course, but keep an eye out for your Ethics Card to help you spend wisely in the future.

The Journey to the Interface

Not quite hot off the press but still still warmish - Demos' The Journey to the Interface is essential reading for anyone looking at, thinking about, or doing public service design.

Authored by Sophia Parker and Joe Heapy, 'the pamphlet argues that service design can offer policy makers and practitioners a vision for the transformation of public services, as well as a route to get there. It outlines an agenda for action which spells out how service design approaches can be applied systemically.'
